Getting Out of Your Own Way: The Paralyzing Effects of Fear

Can I be honest….?  Good.

I have to confess that ConfidentinChrist.com  is not a new idea I had… I actually  have had the idea of doing this blog since January 2013 (almost a year ago) and have had it pretty much ready to launch (minus a few tweaks here and there)  since the month of September… but I didn’t do so because I was in my own way. I came up with a million and one excuses as to why I shouldn’t do it back then…or why I should delay it another month.  I literally talked myself out of it month after month. I can now admit that it was fear that held me back from doing what God called me to do. Yes, that infamous four-letter word that paralyzes us day after day, week after week, month after month, and yes, year after year from doing what God has purposed us to do.fear failure face

I am willing to bet a lot of money that you have something you really, really  want to pursue. Something you think about every day, but talk yourself out of because you are afraid of something not working out exactly the way you envisioned it. You may even know someone who has done or is currently doing or pursuing what you want and look at them and say to yourself, “how is he/she doing that.. ?”  The answer is easy.. That person got out of their own way.

It is okay to admit it. We are humans, and yes, we are terrified of failure.

The dictionary defines failure as “lack of success”.  Lacking success in something you are passionate about and that  makes you happy is definitely enough to make us think twice about wanting to go through the pain and heartbreak of being let down because your dream didn’t work out the way you wanted it to. But God would not give you a vision he would not equip you to be able to perform. No matter what it is or how difficult is seems to attain, He just won’t leave you hanging like that.

fear of failure

If you  think your goal is too extreme or gigantic… that is okay too. Pray and/or fast about it and most importantly,  surrender it to God so that He can give you the courage and humility to let go and let Him show you what to do.

Start small if you have to:  Take it step by step and let God order your steps to open the doors that seemed so large and too heavy to open by yourself. That is what gave me the confidence (pun intended) to launch ConfidentinChrist. com.  I also felt like I was being disobedient and blocking my own blessings by putting it off each month.  (I will get on that topic in another blog).

With the new year right around the corner, what things are you standing in your own way of doing? Is it starting a business, going back to school, changing careers, writing a book, becoming a homeowner, etc. ? If you want or need prayer in this area don’t hesitate to leave me a prayer request and I will definitely pray for you. 🙂

Now I am in no way a master at getting out of my own way just yet, but I hope to one day be… Here are a few scripture verses that will help release the hold fear may have on you. Join me in meditating on these.

For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline – 2 Timothy 1:7

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand – Isaiah 41: 10

I prayed to the Lord, and he answered me. He freed me from all my fears.. – Psalm 34: 4

Shoutout to everyone who got out or is in the process of getting out of their own way. Continue to be an example that we all need!

  3. “… God would not give you a vision he would not equip you to be able to perform.” How many times has His word revealed this to me and this time you mentioning it is no different. His grace is sufficient to help us in the times we’re afraid to take that step. His love compels us to trust Him enough to take it and His faithfulness encourages us that He’ll definitely be there at our side when we do take that step.. with Him. Kudos for listening to God and writing this encouraging post. Please keep it coming.
